Humanitarian and Emergency Assistance

Current Projects/Programs within the Humanitarian and Emergency Assistance Sector:

Australia continues to be a generous and responsive donor of humanitarian assistance to Indonesia, having provided almost A$161.5 million for this purpose since 1999. A further estimated A$6.7 million will be provided in 2005-06. Working with international non-government and United Nations organisations, Australian assistance responds to immediate humanitarian needs, addresses the underlying causes of conflict and fosters social cohesion.

In response to discontinuation of the UN Consolidated Appeal (CAP) process in Indonesia, Australia will focus on building stronger strategic partnerships with selected, credible multilaterals and international NGOs to address the broader requirements of conflict prevention and social cohesion, while maintaining flexibility to respond to developments in potential flashpoints such as Aceh, Ambon/Maluku and Central Sulawesi.
