Background

SMERU Research Institute was established in 1998 with initial funding of A$810,000. The Institute conducts assessments on poverty and the operation of economic programs in urban and rural areas to provide up-to-date information and advice to policy makers, program planners, external support agencies, NGOs and civil society.

Description

Funding of A$3 million over five years is enabling the continuation and development of SMERU as a high level, self-reliant and independent research agency. These new funds will bring Australia's total support to SMERU to A$6.9 million.

Achievements/outcomes

  • Raising awareness within the government, international community and civil society of social and economic conditions in Indonesia.
  • Broadening and improving public policy dialogue by and between the Indonesian Government and the international community.
  • Enhancing the role of civil society groups in the process of formulating and implementing public policy.
