Background

SMERU Research Institute was established in 1998 with initial funding of A$810,000. The Institute conducts assessments on poverty and the operation of economic programs in urban and rural areas to provide up-to-date information and advice to policy makers, program planners, external support agencies, NGOs and civil society.

Description

Funding of A$3 million over five years is enabling the continuation and development of SMERU as a high level, self-reliant and independent research agency. These new funds will bring Australia's total support to SMERU to A$6.9 million.

Raising awareness within the government, international community and civil society of social and economic conditions in Indonesia.
Broadening and improving public policy dialogue by and between the Indonesian Government and the international community.
Enhancing the role of civil society groups in the process of formulating and implementing public policy.
