Natural Disasters
Australia has responded to a series of natural disasters that have hit
parts of Indonesia since 1997. The Australian response include forest
fires in Southern part of Sumatera island (Lampung, Bengkulu and Palembang)
and Kalimantan island in 1997; the Indonesia-wide 1998 drought; Bengkulu
earthquake in June 2000; flood and landslides in Central Java and West
Sumatera in 2000; Jakarta and East Java floods in 2002; earthquake in
Papua in November 2002; earthquake in Alor island, West Timor in mid and
late 2004; earthquake in Nabire, Papua in 2004; and the biggest disaster
is the earthquake and tsunamis in Aceh, North Sumatera in December 2004,
the earthquake in Nias island in March 2005 and recently the Sumatera
forest fires (August 2005).
Most recent assistance are as follows:
- Australia has provided an emergency humanitarian contribution of A$50,000
through IFRC/PMI to help Indonesian earthquake victims in Alor, East
Nusa Tenggara in November 2004.
- Humanitarian and emergency relief assistance of A$75,000 was also
provided to the victims of the earthquake in Nabire, Papua and to help
victims in Alor, East Nusa Tenggara. The funding will be used by IFRC
to provide basic shelter, health assistance and educational support
for the most vulnerable families.
- Tsunamis in Aceh and North Sumatera (December 2004). See current

- Earthquake in Nias islands (March 2005). See further

- Sumatera Forest Fires (August 2005). Australia has deployed 8 Queensland
fire-fighters to Pekanbaru to assist the Indonesian authorities in planning
and management of their response to such disasters and to help determine
what further assistance Australia may be able to provide.
