Background

The Indonesia Australia Legal Development Facility (IALDF) is a five-year program that builds on AusAID's experience in the development and management of the Legal Reform Program (LRP) initiated in June 2001 and completed in May 2003. LRP was AusAID's first program in Indonesia solely dedicated to the legal sector.

Description

The IALDF is working with Indonesian Government agencies, legal and judicial institutions and legal and human rights-focused civil society organisations in four core areas:

  • Anti-corruption
  • Access to Justice
  • Transnational Crime
  • Human Rights

Key Indonesian counterpart agencies include the Supreme Court, Attorney General's Department, Corruption Eradication Commission and Komnas HAM. Our Lead Advisers work closely with these institutions to ensure the LDF continues to identify and implement activities which address the needs of the institutions which are central to the Indonesian Government's legal reform agenda.

Achievements/outcomes

  • Visit of Indonesian Chief Justice Bagir Manan to the Australian Federal Court, in support of the Supreme Court's Blueprint for reform under the MOU between the two courts signed in January 2006.
  • Assisting the Supreme Court in resolving its case backlog through a program of audit, review and analysis and judgement finalisation phases, involving a combination of Indonesian technical expertise and strategic guidance from the Federal Court of Australia.
  • Supporting the production and distribution of Indonesia's first Legal Aid Handbook.
  • Supporting the establishment of Project Management Office (PMO) at the Attorney General Office (AGO) to provide assistance in the implementation of the Agenda for Reform.
  • Supporting the Judicial Reform Team Office (JRTO) in the Supreme Court to provide assistance to the Supreme Court in Donor Coordination and the implementation of the Blueprint for reform.
  • Supporting a Training of Trainers (ToT) for Mediation Skills in Aceh.
