Background

Kang Guru Radio English has been funded by AusAID since it began in 1989. The weekly 20 minute English radio program is broadcast in all provinces of Indonesia through 100 Radio Republik Indonesia and a range of private, local government and community/school-based radio stations. A quarterly Kang Guru magazine is distributed to 15,000 registered listeners of the radio program, 900 educational institutions and members of 60 KGRE Connection Language Clubs (KGCC).

Description

The program assists people with mid-elementary to pre-intermediate levels of English to improve their skills in English communication. The program also promotes knowledge and understanding of Australia, including information on Australia's development cooperation program with Indonesia.

KGRE has developed beyond a radio program. It is now a multimedia activity with an interactive website, an English language magazine and English language clubs spread throughout Indonesia. A recent feature is the development of ‘Kang Guru in the Classroom’ Teacher Packages containing KGRE Radio English programs and transcripts, Teacher Guides and English language listening activities. KGRE currently has two Teacher Packages - the original KGRE Teacher Package plus the newly released SMP Level Teacher Package. The KGRE SMA Level Package is available in mid-2006. A special 'Listening and Reading Class Set' is also produced with each new magazine.

Achievements/outcomes

  • Since 2001, KGRE has conducted teacher workshops for over 3000 English language teachers on how to use the Kang Guru Teacher Packages.
  • KGRE materials (buku tulis, pens, pencils, magazines) were provided to tsunami affected areas in Nias, Aceh and Lokseumawe in January/February 2005 (in conjunction with LAPIS).
  • Support of LAPIS, ISELP and AVI activities throughout Indonesia with teaching materials, magazines, teacher workshops and visits.
  • Establishment of an English language radio interactive presenters’ network in mid 2005. As of February 2006 the network comprised 12 members working in stations predominantly in East Java and Eastern Indonesia.
