Background

The Australian Government is providing A$6.5 million over four years to support local election processes in Indonesia. The grant, administered through the Asia Foundation, supports voter education and election monitoring activities conducted by the Jaringan Pendidikan Pemilih untuk Rakyat (JPPR) or People's Voter Education Network, a coalition of Indonesian mass-based organisations and NGOs.

Description

Funding will assist the Network to monitor district, municipal and gubernatorial elections to 2009, and to issue regular reports and statements on the election process in each constituency. In addition, the funding will assist partner organisations to deliver quick count training for media in all provinces, sponsor voter guides and political party forums and debates, and conduct pluralism and election legislation watch in five provinces (West Java, East Java, Central Java, South Sulawesi and Aceh).

Achievements/outcomes

  • Deployment of around 30,000 volunteers to observe direct local elections in 166 regent/mayoral and six gubernatorial elections.
  • Increase in the information available to voters about the candidates standing for office with the production of a manual on voter education and information for voters about candidates.
  • Conducting candidate debates in 14 areas.
  • 28 quick-count training sessions conducted.
