Health Assistance Rehabilitation - Aceh Program (HARAP)
BackgroundThe combination of three decades of conflict and the impact of the tsunami left health services and infrastructure in Aceh in dire shape and unable to adequately meet the needs of the Province. Aceh's main hospital, Zainoel Abidin, was badly damaged in the tsunami and many health workers, along with students and staff of health training schools, either lost their lives or lost their families and homes. Seven other hospitals, and 11 provincial health centres were destroyed. Australia responded quickly and provided emergency relief support to affected areas, including emergency support services at the provincial hospital, where AIPRD continues to provide assistance. AIPRD supported the immediate needs of the Provincial Health Office including management support, implementation of health service systems and repairs to buildings and infrastructure. Australia is now embarking upon a longer-term program of activities in the health sector. DescriptionThe goal of the Health Assistance Rehabilitation - Aceh Program (HARAP) is to assist the Government of Indonesia in achieving sustainable improvement in the health of the people of Aceh and other tsunami affected areas. The program aims to strengthen the health system in Aceh province as a whole by addressing elements of the system such as health workforce training, operational and strategic management support, clinical support services and support at the Zainoel Abidin Hospital.
