Food Security
Since 1998 total Australian food aid to Indonesia delivered through various
organisations is over A$61 million. The form of assistance has been grains
(wheat and rice) and cash.
- The bulk of Australia's food aid has been delivered by the United
Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and their local NGO implementing
partners. In 2002/2003, Australia has committed a further A$12.5 million
in cash and Australian rice, to support WFP's Protracted Relief and
Recovery Operation (PRRO) due to finish in December 2003. The PRRO provides
assistance to urban poor in Jakarta and Surabaya through a subsidised
rice program, nutritional support to children under five and lactating
mothers and support to IDPs across Indonesia. In 2003/2004, Australia
has committed a further A$11.5 million in cash and Australian rice,
to support WFP's PRRO for 2004-2007. This new PRRO will extend limited
assistance in support of Indonesia's recovery process and will introduce
a new element “nutritional rehabilitation” to counter widespread
malnutrition among most vulnerable groups, specifically children between
two and five, primary school children, as well as pregnant and lactating
mothers.
- WFP-PRRO 10069.1 (July 2004-2005): A$6,600,000. Assistance to approximately
2 million poors including urban poors, children and pregnant and lactating
mothers in urban areas of Central Sulawesi, Madura, Maluku, West Timor
and the poorest communities of Greater Jakarta, Surabaya and Semarang.
