Emerging Infectious Diseases
BackgroundAustralia was one of the first countries to support Indonesia's response to the Avian Influenza challenge by committing funds in early 2004 and our new program of support to Indonesia will be funded under Prime Minister Howard's commitment of A$100 million to combat avian influenza and other emerging infectious diseases in the Asia Pacific Region. This program will focus on the surveillance of both human and animal health and its implementation will be closely informed by the government of Indonesia's National Strategic Plan for Avian Influenza Control and Pandemic Influenza Preparedness 2006-2008. DescriptionAustralia's program on Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) will adopt an intersectoral approach to Avian Influenza (AI) working with the UN World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) to strengthen disease detection, surveillance and response systems and strategies at the national and sub-national levels. Australia's EID program will support collaboration between the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) to strengthen early warning at the community level. A cooperative partnership between Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation's (CSIRO) and MOA will improve zoonotic disease surveillance through the development of a reliable Indonesian veterinary laboratory network. Under the EID program, an activity led by Australia's Quarantine and Inspection Service will fortify Indonesia's internal quarantine services in order to contain the spread of the Avian Influenza H5N1 virus. Indonesia's MOH and the WHO will cooperate on a project that provides technical support for epidemiological monitoring and reporting of human cases. This page was last updated on 3 October 2007
