Australia Indonesia Partnership Country Strategy 2008-13

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced a new five-year development partnership with Indonesia during a visit with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta on 13 June 2008.

The Australia Indonesia Partnership Country Strategy 2008-13 reflects the determination of the two countries to work together to help tackle poverty and promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.

Importantly, Australia will help Indonesia to make faster progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals, particularly to improve the health of mothers and children, increase access to clean water and sanitation and address climate change.

The first program to be funded is a four-year $49 million maternal and neonatal health program to make pregnancy and childbirth safer for women in Indonesia's poorest areas, such as Nusa Tenggara Timur and other eastern Indonesian provinces.

The program will fund:

  • increased access to trained midwives during pregnancy and childbirth
  • improved management of maternal and neonatal health services
  • improved community level support structures for new and expecting mothers.

As part of Australia's new five-year development partnership with Indonesia, the Australian Government will provide up to $50 million to assist Aceh to build a prosperous and peaceful future after the dual impact of the tsunami and 30 years of civil conflict left it as one of Indonesia's poorest provinces.

These funds will be used to:

  • improve the quality of education for Acehnese children
  • assist governments to deliver better services
  • help community members, including women, to participate in decision-making and democratic processes
  • rebuild livelihoods and foster economic development.

This marks the transition from Australia's highly successful rehabilitation work in Aceh to an ongoing commitment to the province's longer-term development.
