| Estimated budget | A$6.3 million |
| Commenced | January 2004 |
| Completed | June 2007 |
| Implementing Agencies | UNICEF, through provincial and district health agencies, local governments, and community organisations |
| Main Locations | East Nusa Tenggara and Papua |
The goal of this project was to improve health services, systems and behaviours that influence pregnancy and birth outcomes in the provinces of Nusa Tenggara Timur and Papua. The project built on the experiences and lessons learned from the AusAID funded UNICEF Safe Motherhood Programme, and initiatives such as the Indonesian Government's National Safe Motherhood Programme.
The project focused on nine districts in NTT (East and West Sumba, Alor districts and Kupang city) and Papua (Jayapura, Jayawijaya, Biak Numfor, Manokwari and Sorong districts) over the period 2004-2006. It has contributed to the achievement of the goals and targets in the Indonesian Government's Making Pregnancy Safer (MPS) National Strategic Plan.
The project helped to strengthen planning, systems and institutions in these nine districts to improve emergency obstetric care services, reduce pregnancy-related risks and improve pregnancy outcomes.
It has contributed to increased community knowledge and participation in improving pregnancy outcomes in the nine project districts and the creation of more sustainable health systems and institutions. The project targeted the poor and under-served populations such as out-of-school girls aged 15-19 through the Adolescent Girls Health and Nutrition package.
