Electoral Reform Support (Completed)Australia has allocated US$1.7 million into the UNDP managed Trust Fund of the Partnership for Governance Reform. These are unspent funds from AusAID’s contribution to the UNDP 1999 General Election Trust Fund. These funds have been earmarked for electoral reform. Initial assistance for the 2004 General Election has been provided to strengthen the capacity of Komisi Pemilihan Umum (KPU). This A$765,500 assistance is delivered in cooperation with the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC). The 2004 elections are a significant event marking the first time that the President and Vice President will be directly elected. It is crucial for Indonesia's political and social stability and prospects for economic recovery that the 2004 elections are perceived as credible, both domestically and internationally. The Australian Government has committed A$15 million to support the 2004 Parliamentary and Presidential elections. This commitment includes A$3.6 million to the Australian Election Commission to build the capacity of the Indonesian Election Commission the KPU including the development and conduct of electoral administration training. A$9 million has been provided to the UNDP trust fund for voter education, election monitoring and training. A$2 million has been provided through the Asia Foundation to the People's Network for Voter Education (JPPR) to mobilise 140,000 volunteer, community-based election monitors nationwide for the 5 July Presidential poll. The balance of funds will cover the costs of mobilising teams of Australian Electoral Observers for both the Parliamentary and Presidential polls. This page was last updated on 14 July 2004
